Citizens Online and Linkage collaborate to provide free wifi for sheltered housing tenants

Residents at Jennings Court in Bedminster are being provided with free access to the Internet thanks to a partnership between the Get IT Together Bristol Project run by Citizens Online and Linkage.

Jennings Court in Bedminster is a sheltered housing scheme for older people run by Housing 21. They provide rented accommodation and support to enable people to maintain and promote their independence and enjoy a good quality of life.  One way in which Mike Higgs, the Court Manager has been able to support residents has been to work with Citizens Online digital coordinator Kerry Bradshaw to provide free beginners computer courses for their residents and other local older people in the area.

Each week a volunteer comes in to the shared living space for 2 hours to run a 5 week course in using laptops and getting online.  The internet connection has been provided free of charge by BT for a year. Now that scheme is coming to an end, Linkage and Citizens Online are working together to share the cost of the internet connection. This will ensure that residents can continue to experience the benefits of getting online through the Get IT Together courses and can access the internet whenever they need to.

BT and Get IT Together

BT is at the heart of digital communications. We believe that information communications technology can make a real difference to individuals and communities that find themselves on the wrong side of the ‘digital divide’.

BT has been helping people to get online since 2002. Last year, BT invested money, time and in-kind contributions worth £27.1 million. This exceeded our target to invest at least one per cent of underlying pre-tax profits in community programmes and sustainability.
