Remembrance project goes live in Sutherland

In North West Sutherland, BT, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, High Life Highland, and Citizens Online are working together to deliver the Get IT Together Programme, a community development approach to digital inclusion, helping people across the area to benefit from gaining on line skills.
Get IT Together – North West Sutherland, High Life Highland Adult Education, Lairg Heritage Society and Lairg Learning Centre have come together to run a WW1 remembrance project called Reading between the lines.
The project will last for ten months and will involve many people from the local community. The aim is to create a space for community heritage online by using a local app, and through various online platforms including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The project will bring together a wealth of local memories about the war through a range of media including a digital achive, drama, writing, music and filmmaking.
The project launched on Friday 25 October 2013 and was well received with over a hundred people attending. Visitors were able to visit a beautifully recreated WW1 shop, enjoy tea and cakes and sing along with wartime songs found online.
Precious images of local family members who had helped the war effort were projected onto a big screen. It was a tremendous effort from a team of fantastic volunteers and everyone had a really enjoyable night.
Irene Warner Mackintosh – Project Coordinator for Get IT Together- North West Sutherland commented: “I felt privileged and humbled hearing people’s memories of those loved and lost. The project is helping to bring together the local community and ensures their relatives are never forgotten and remain part of Sutherland forever.”
