Communities First and Get IT Together provide IT learning opportunities for Friends of Catref

Friends of Catref is a group that runs a local luncheon club for the over 50s on a Tuesday, and which has been running for the past couple of years. As well as a luncheon club, the group runs and plays a number of raffles and bingo games, along with organising day trips.

A number of off-shoot classes have sprung up, including sugarcraft classes and a successful knitting club. With support from a Communities First officer, the group were able to secure funding from a community grant to purchase 5 laptops. This has enabled them to run basic IT classes with the support of Communities First and Get IT Together staff.

Classes have been centred around informal learning and are tailored to what the group members want to learn. So far they have been shown how to use email, Skype, Google and various other applications to encourage them to get involved with the internet and to embrace the benefits it has to offer. Members have also shown a keen interest in tracing their family history, along with visiting places and things of interest via Google Earth and Wikipedia.
