Bettws

The Bettws project is no longer active

The EverybodyOnline project in Bettws was launched in October 2003 and closed in November 2005.

The Bettws ward of Newport is the 2nd largest local authority housing estate in Europe, with a population of 8,278. Bettws was chosen because the level of Internet connectivity in the ward was very low and only approximately eight PC's were made readily available to the residents of Bettws.

The project officer’s aims were to change this and make accessing the Internet easier. With access available through taster sessions and informal courses people have the chance understand and get confident in using digital technology and the Internet in a relaxed environment.

The role of the EverybodyOnline project officer in Bettws was to build relationships with local partners and to try and break down the barriers that exist within the area.

Sustainable progress
The innovative work of EverybodyOnline in Bettws is now being continued by a national programme for Wales, Communities@One. EverybodyOnline Project Officer, Helen Kell, has been employed by Communities@One and will now be delivering projects aimed at engaging communities with digital technology across South Wales.
