Reigniting interests by getting online – Bob’s story

Bob Thompson is a resident at the Torus retirement scheme Bernard Wood Court, in Billinge, Wigan. Bob lost his dear wife Elizabeth in 2016, and has lived in his flat at Bernard Wood for 5 years.

At 96 years young, Bob has decided to try his hand at joining the digital world! Earlier in 2021, Bob had been given a tablet by the Torus Foundation digital inclusion team along with some help to set the tablet up. He also received some support from the team on how to switch it on and do basic tasks using it.

Citizens Online digital champion, Medwyn Williams, started delivering digital skills sessions in Bernard Wood Court in August, and Bob has been along to each session with his tablet. In the first session, Medwyn chatted with Bob to find out his interests and open up the possibilities of what he would be able to do online. One of Bob’s lifelong interests is music, and Medwyn was able to help him find a recording of Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, one of Bob’s favourite operas. Bob was delighted to be able to listen to the recording!

With continuing 1 to 1 support from Medwyn, Bob is currently learning how to use You Tube to find musical videos for his enjoyment and explore what else he can do online.

Bob says “I am happy to learn one thing at the time, concentrating on You Tube and hopefully progress further to video calling family.”
